Globalization and the environment

This paper wanted to devote to environmental problems that are linked to globalization. As we know, pollution and environmental destruction and its impact on our lives are issues much discussed and very modern. In my opinion it is essential to reflect on this issue and that environmental changes severely affect each of us
As we saw in the first classes of our subject, globalization brings rapid progress in technology, a high mobility of goods and people, a heightened need for communication networks and more. This evolution has meant that the whole society, both producers and consumers, has a high demand for energy and natural resources.
To meet global demand companies have to be competitive, which means they try to produce at lower prices, which results in a high exploitation and pollution of environmental resources.

What is the environmental problem exactly? What are the characteristics of good "environment"?
  • The most important thing is that environment is a free good. That means that there is a market that determines price. As we know perfectly well that the "environment", say water, air and earth, does not exist in abundance, in other words, is a scarce commodity. Since there is no market for the environment, not priced to reflect their scarcity. Having no money, you can not determine the costs that relate to the environment that causes a product. That is to say that the price of a product will never reflect all the costs caused by product. Second
  • should be noted that environmental problems are not problems that affect only a certain area or region but are global problems affecting all countries in the world. The actions of one country directly affect others, such as energy production through nuclear power near the border of the neighboring country affects the environment of that country.
  • environmental protection is always linked to the problem "free rider." This means that if a country decides to protect its natural environment produces positive externalities also serve other countries, although others do not pay for these externalities. Because of this phenomenon environmental protection is often not carried out because a country has cost while others can also profit shares.

What is your conclusion? What can be done about these problems linked to the environment?

In my opinion it is clear that you must create a market for good "environment." The Kyoto Protocol and the emissions business licenses are first steps in this direction. The fundamental problem is that the Kyoto protocol is not mandatory for all countries, which lead to environmental protection does not work As we saw earlier. Therefore need to create a binding legal framework for countries around the world. It is important to establish appropriate limitations for all world trade and that everyone plays by the same rules. I think that's the biggest challenge in the future if we will want to protect our vital space sustainably. Therefore it is necessary to start creating adequate legislation to European Union level and I'm sure we are able to take the role of striker.

Austria and the Internet - E-commerce

E-commerce in the European Union
According to a Forrester Research study Internet commerce has been very popular and successful in recent years. In 2006 the UK was the European leader in terms of e-commerce. It had a volume of Internet trade of 43 billion Euros. Germany was the second most important country with a volume of 23 billion Euros.
The study predicts that online commerce will grow to 76 billion Euros in the UK and 62 billion Euros in Germany until 2011.

The evolution of e-commerce in Austria
Compared to the large EU countries the total volume of online trade in Austria is relatively small. On the one hand we are a very small country and we are known across to be very reserved with regard to Internet commerce. I guess this has to do with our overall retention as a means of payment such as credit card. It can be noticed in general that Austrians tend to use the safest methods in terms of money when it comes to saving as much of the payment. For example, the preferred method for saving money is the savings account but could earn higher interest with investment vehicles such as stocks or letters. However
online trade will increase to 7 billion Euros in Austria, which is quadruple the 2006 volume

Where To Buy Smeg Fridges In Melbourne

A fiction

In this post I wanted to present a very interesting link I found on the Internet. The video shows a fiction of a world in which the press has come to exist. In 2015 the world is governed by very few companies use any information we have given them to offer more sophisticated services. The price we must pay is objectivity and freedom of movement ...
Could this fiction become reality? What can we do against this development?

Highly, highly recommended!

What is globalization? - A subjective view

As we saw in the first class course, it is very difficult to find a generally valid definition. Each has a different understanding of what globalization is. It is defined as elimination of borders and barriers and bringing different countries, the increased exchange of information, knowledge and skills ... For some of us these facts have resulted in a homogenization and loss of cultural identity and diversity.

one hand I agree with this statement. Surely the process of globalization brings losses in some areas but do not skip the generation of new knowledge through the cooperation of countries and cultures. For me not necessarily lose parts of our identity, but the transmit and share with others. Unlike other cultures take advantage of allowing us to enrich our own. In my opinion
Krugman and Obstfeld (book International Economics) set a good example, talk about cultural homogenization and that it is evident that happens but if we see for example the famous movie "Matrix" of Hollywood. Of course everyone knows this movie cinemas and all the show but "Matrix" presents us not only a culture but has battle scenes that clearly originate in Hong Kong films.
I do not mean that all Hollywood productions extend our knowledge of other cultures, but some do.

For me globalization is also what we are doing every day in classes in both Alicante and in Innsbruck and elsewhere. Work together with students from other countries and take advantage of their knowledge and experiences. Is there a loss of cultural identity in this case?
do not know if I've drawn a very positive image of globalization, but I'm glad the discussion!

Welcome to the blog of Alex Liegl

Welcome to my blog on the subject "Economics of Globalization" at the University of Alicante . At first let us introduce: My name is Alexander Liegl and I'ma student of the second cycle of International Economics at the University of Innsbruck . It is a race that is required to study a year abroad. I'm glad to have the opportunity to study in University of Alicante and to build up my experience of both living and studying in Spain.

In my blog I will focus on the important aspects that have to do with globalization today. Try to present both points of view objective and subjective viewpoints. In my opinion, the subjective views are particularly important especially when we speak of a complex term such as globalization. As each of us has an imagination quite different from what globalization is, its advantages and disadvantages, must share the views to broaden their horizon.

Thank you for your interest and hope my comments will also contribute to a interesting and active discussion. Alexander Liegl
